چکیده

The Steiner tree problem is deened as follows-given a graph G = (V; E) and a subset X V of terminals, compute a minimum cost tree that includes all nodes in X. Furthermore, it is reasonable to assume that the edge costs form a metric. This problem is NP-hard and has been the study of many heuristics and algorithms. We study a generalization of this problem, where there is a \switch" cost in addition to the cost of the edges. Switches are placed at internal nodes of the tree (essentially, we may assume that all non-leaf nodes of the Steiner tree have a switch). The cost for placing a switch may vary from node to node. A restricted version of this problem, where the terminal set X cannot be connected to each other directly but only via the Steiner nodes V n X , is referred to as the Steiner Tree-Star problem. The General Steiner Tree-Star problem does not require the terminal set and Steiner node set to be disjoint. This generalized problem can be reduced to the node weighted Steiner tree problem, for which algorithms with performance guarantees of (ln n) are known. However, such approach does not make use of the fact that the edge costs form a metric. In this paper we derive approximation algorithms with small constant factors for this problem. We show two diierent polynomial time algorithms with approximation factors of 5:16 and 5.

Solving a tri-objective convergent product network using the Steiner tree

Considering convergent product as an important manufacturing technology for digital products, we integrate functions and sub-functions using a comprehensive fuzzy mathematical optimization process. To form the convergent product, a web-based fuzzy network is considered in which a collection of base functions and sub-functions configure the nodes and each arc in the network is to be a link betwe...

On stars and Steiner stars: II

A Steiner star for a set P of n points in R connects an arbitrary center point to all points of P , while a star connects a point p ∈ P to the remaining n−1 points of P . All connections are realized by straight line segments. Fekete and Meijer showed that the minimum star is at most √ 2 times longer than the minimum Steiner star for any finite point configuration in R. The maximum ratio betwee...

Worst-case ratios of networks in the rectilinear plane

For point sets in the rectilinear plane we consider the following five measures of the interconnect length and prove bounds on the worst-case ratio: minimum Steiner tree, minimum star, clique, minimum spanning tree, and bounding box. In particular, we prove that for any set of n points: (n − 1) times the shortest Steiner tree is less or equal to the clique unless n = 4; and the minimum spanning...

On the hardness of full Steiner tree problems

Given a weighted graph G = (V,E) and a subset R of V , a Steiner tree in G is a tree which spans all vertices in R. The vertices in V \R are called Steiner vertices. A full Steiner tree is a Steiner tree in which each vertex of R is a leaf. The full Steiner tree problem is to find a full Steiner tree with minimum weight. The bottleneck full Steiner tree problem is to find a full Steiner tree wh...

An algorithmic framework for the exact solution of tree-star problems

Many problems arising in the area of telecommunication ask for solutions with a tree-star topology. This paper proposes a general procedure for finding optimal solutions to a family of these problems. The family includes problems in the literature named as connected facility location, rent-or-buy and generalized Steiner tree-star. We propose a solution framework based on a branch-and-cut algori...
